For five centuries these fabulations have parodied indigenous and Hindu textual traditions. Both mimicking and mocking, these parodies adopted a subjunctive tone, exploring a magical world of ‘what-if’. They created an Islam-inflected space within a traditional Bengali cultural environment without trying to legislate what ideally ‘should be’ according to tropes common to Islamic history, theology, and law. The tales’ discursive arena, the imaginaire, delineated the realm of possibility for how these tales might exercise the imagination to integrate Hindu and Islamic cosmologies. Tales insinuated themselves into locally relevant discourses through elaborate intertextual connections, subtly shifting presuppositions about the way the world works and what counts as religious authority. As Allah looked on from heaven, the tales routinely assigned Sufi saints, both pirs and bibis, to the pivotal role of avatar, the periodic descent of divinity, equating them to the Hindu god Narayan. Adopting a semiotic strategy to interpret these tales yields a bold new perspective on the subtle ways Islam assumed its distinctive form in Bengal and suggests how we need to reimagine conversion in this region.\&\#xD;}, language = {English}, author = {Stewart, Tony K.}, year = {2019}, keywords = {Bengali, Hindu, Islam, Sufi, avatar, conversion, imaginaire, imagination, katha, parody, pir, romance, saint, semiotics, subjunctive} }

By shifting the focus from doctrinal content to questions of method, Kenyon seeks to reframe scholarly discussions of Augustine's earliest surviving body of works. This approach shows the young Augustine not refuting so much as appropriating Academic skeptical practices. It also shows that the dialogues' few scriptural references, e.g. Wisdom 11:20's 'measure, number, weight', come at key structural points. This helps articulate the dialogues' larger project of cultivating virtue and their approach to philosophy as a form of purification. Augustine is shown to be at home with pluralistic approaches, and Kenyon holds up his methodology as an attractive model for thinking through problems of the liberal academy today.}, language = {eng}, publisher = {Cambridge University Press}, author = {Kenyon, Erik}, year = {2018}, keywords = {Augustine, of Hippo, Saint, 354-430 Dialogues, Dialogue, Early works, Early works to 1800, Philosophy, Theology}, }

I begin by arguing that Fitzpatrick's criticisms of it as psychologically inadequate fail because they do not take seriously enough the metaphysical structure of this doctrine, viz, creation from nothing. The second part begins with a critique of Fitzpatrick's interpretation of Genesis 3 and continues with a critical analysis of his proposed alternative to Augustine on original sin ('original sinfulness') with reference to the scriptural passages he cites in its support. The conclusion I reach is that 'original sinfulness' is not an acceptable biblical hermeneutic. In the third section, I discuss Fitzpatrick's concept of 'prototypical action' and, using recent work of Carol Harrison on Augustine's early theological writings, I argue that, far from being incompatible with Augustine's theology of original sin, as Fitzpatrick maintains, this concept enables us to understand Augustine's position in a way that overcomes Fitzpatrick's objections to it.}, number = {1}, urldate = {2015-09-26TZ}, journal = {Heythrop Journal}, author = {Heans, Simon}, month = {January}, year = {2013}, keywords = {AUGUSTINE, Saint, Bishop of Hippo, 354-430, FITZPATRICK, Joseph, HARRISON, Carol, ORIGINAL sin, THEOLOGY}, pages = {55--69} }

'Creatio ex nihilo' means, among other things, that nothing can exist that is not caused by the universal power of God. The universal causality of creation implies that God cannot receive from the world or react to any activity on our part. This claim of divine immutability throws into question the intelligibility of prayer: does it make sense to pray to God when his providence is certain and immutable? I argue that the God Thomas conceives is not the God of the ancient régime, the sovereign deity of absolute power who is in charge of everything; on the contrary, it is a God who grants the secondary causes within the world their own power and operation. The human activity of prayer belongs to this sphere of 'second causes', through which God realizes his providential plan. Gregory of Nyssa in particular made a major contribution to later Byzantine thought on questions of providence in his works. I examine Gregory's discussion of this theme together with those of fate, the origin of evil, human free will, and the role of their interplay in determining individual human destinies. Gregory's contribution is contrasted with that of three Fathers from a similar period - Sarapion of Thmuis, Leo the Great, and Theodoret of Cyrrhus. By turning this perspective on its head, Indian Sufism since the Seventeenth Century reveals the politics and poetry of Indian Sufism through the study of Islamic sainthood in the midst of a cosmopolitan Indian society comprising migrants, soldiers, litterateurs and princes. Placing the mystical traditions of Indian Islam within their cultural contexts, this interesting study focuses on the shrines of four Sufi saints in the neglected Deccan region and their changing roles under the rule of the Mughals, the Nizams of Haydarabad and, after 1948, the Indian nation. In particular Green studies the city of Awrangabad, examining the vibrant intellectual and cultural history of this city as part of the independent state of Haydarabad. He employs a combination of historical texts and anthropological fieldwork, which provide a fresh perspective on developments of devotional Islam in South Asia over the past three centuries, giving a fuller understanding of Sufism and Muslim saints in South Asia.}, language = {English}, author = {Green, Nile}, year = {2006}, keywords = {anniversary, citys, conquests, death, dln, fakhr, mughal, saint, saints, shrine} }

This dissertation begins by problematising the sentiment that {"We} are all the same" by challenging the fundamental tenets of cross-cultural psychology. In short, I show that ancient and modern personality are/were not constructed similarly, and thus an approach to ancient conversion that understands or views it from within a modern psychological framework is ethnocentric. The over-arching goal of this work is to provide an alternative framework for understanding ancient conversion. The recognition that ancient Mediterranean people cast their interactions with their gods in the language of patronage and clientage is the first step in providing this alternative framework. The analysis of narratives describing the relationships between human and divine patrons and clients reveals a consistent set of rhetorical conventions--the call of the patron, the philosopher as patron, prayer, praise and proselytism, patronal synkrisis, and the ca,rij of the patron. These conventions comprise a rhetoric of patronage and benefaction; that they all appear in the conversion narratives of Paul, as well as in those of many other ancient personages, suggests that Paul's conversion narrative is better understood within the domain of ancient divine patronage and benefaction. Conversion, in short, involved a change in the patronal relationship. What was at stake, however, was not merely a change in patron but the expressions of honour and loyalty that were the foundational feature of the patron-client relationship. Loyalty in manumission and in philosophy provides the best example of the interaction between loyalty and patronal change (or conversion). Patronage and loyalty, and thus conversion too, were about relationships and their characteristic behaviours (honour, reciprocity) far more than they were about states of mind or emotional traumas. While loyalty admits to a certain degree of emotion, and is helpful for that reason, it is an action, not a state of mind or an emotion. Recognising the different ways in which personality and identity were constructed in antiquity means we have to reconsider the assumptions of emotional parallelism that characterise many studies of ancient conversion.}, language = {English}, urldate = {2012-07-04}, school = {University of St. Michael's College (Canada)}, author = {Crook, Zeba Antonin}, year = {2003}, keywords = {Ancient, Conversion, Loyalty, Mediterranean, Patronage, Paul, Philosophy, Saint, Saint Paul, religion and theology} }

The investigation of each of these features confirms the illuminative power of the Girardian hermeneutical theory. Mimetic rivalry is the cause of the factionalism, and the apostle counters it with the exhortation to imitate Christ the victim rather than each other. He presents himself as such an imitator of Christ, especially in his sufferings and trials (peristaseis); and he presents an understanding of the church as the body of Christ the victim.
