Monitoring Plan Optimality During Execution.Fritz, C., and McIlraith, S. A.2007.In Proceedings of the Seventeenth International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS 2007), September 22 - 26. Monitoring Plan Optimality During ExecutionBibtexAbstract:
A great deal of research has addressed the problem of generating optimal plans, but these plans are of limited use in circumstances where noisy sensors, unanticipated exogenous actions, or imperfect models result in discrepancies between predicted and observed states of the world during plan execution. Such discrepancies bring into question the continued optimality of the plan being executed and, according to current-day practice, are resolved by aborting the plan and replanning, often unnecessarily. In this paper we address the problem of monitoring the continued optimality of a given plan at execution time, in the face of such discrepancies. While replanning cannot be avoided when critical aspects of the environment change, our objective is to avoid replanning unnecessarily. We address the problem by building on practical approaches to monitoring plan validity. We begin by formalizing plan validity in the situation calculus and characterizing common approaches to monitoring plan validity. We then generalize this characterization to the notion of plan optimality and propose an algorithm that verifies continued plan optimality. We have implemented our algorithm and tested it on simulated execution failures in well-known planning domains. Experimental results yield a significant speed-up in performance over the alternative of replanning, clearly demonstrating the merit of our approach.

J.2010.In 9th International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC2010), November. Publishing Bibliographic Data on the Semantic Web using BibBaseBibtexAbstract:
We present BibBase, a system for publishing and managing bibliographic data available in BibTeX files on the Semantic Web. BibBase uses a powerful yet light-weight approach to transform BibTeX files into rich Linked Data as well as custom HTML and RSS code that can readily be integrated within a user's website. The data can instantly be queried online on the system's SPARQL endpoint. In this demo, we present a brief overview of the features of our system and outline a few challenges in the design and implementation of such a system.

Expressive Reusable Workflow Templates.Gil, Y.; Groth, P.; Ratnakar, V.; and Fritz, C.2009.In Proceedings of the Fifth IEEE International Conference on e-Science. BibtexAbstract:
Workflow systems can manage complex scientific applications with distributed data processing. Although some workflow systems can represent collections of data with very compact abstractions and manage their execution efficiently, there are no approaches to date to manage collections of application components required to express some scientific applications. We present an approach to handle collections of components and data alike in expressive workflow templates whose basic structure is reusable. We also present an algorithm that can elaborate abstract compact workflow templates into execution-ready workflows that enumerate all computations to be carried out. We implemented the proposed approach in the Wings workflow system. Our work is motivated by real-world complex scientific applications that require handling of nested collections of both components and data.
